We keep a small amount of information in your own browser so the magazine works the way you left it. Nothing here leaves your device or identifies you:

• Your choice of day or night reading theme.
• Pieces you have saved to your reading list.
• A sign-in session, only if you are an editor using The Desk.

Because these features exist only because you asked for them, they are treated as strictly necessary and do not require consent under European or UK rules.

Some stories and recommendations include players from cultural partners such as YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Mixcloud, X, Instagram, TikTok and Bluesky. Those providers may set their own cookies once a player loads, under their own privacy policies.

We therefore hold players back until you allow them. You can enable them for every visit, or load a single player once without changing your preference.

If you subscribe, we store the email address you give us for the sole purpose of telling you when new pieces and issues are published. We do not pass it to advertisers. You can ask us to delete it at any time and we will do so.

Wherever you live, you may ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be erased, or object to its use. Readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom hold these rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR; readers in Brazil under the LGPD; readers in California under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know that we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. Readers in Canada, Australia and elsewhere are covered by equivalent protections.

Refusing optional storage never limits what you can read. Declining is always as easy as accepting.

For any privacy request, write to us through the magazine’s contact channels listed in the footer, stating what you would like us to do. We answer within a reasonable time, and in any case within the one month European rules allow.
